Are you finally taking that vacation that you've waiting all year (or longer) to go on?!

Unfortunately, your empty home is a target for thieves, critters and other issues that could cause a rukus for when you return home and ruin all that peace you gained during your time away!

We know you're excited to pack your bags, but before you go, don't forget these 10 things:

1) Arrange for a friend or neighbour to check in on your home regularly while you're away.

This includes making sure your lawn isn't overgrown, collecting your mail and going inside to check for leaks or anything unusual.

2)  Install timers on your lamps and electronics.

A house that is dark for an extended period of time is an invitation to potential thieves! A timer that sets your lights and other electronics (maybe a radio or the TV) could be the key to making your house look occupied so thieves aren't tempted!

3) Be mindful of your posts!

We know how tempting it is to scream and shout from the rooftops about how excited you are to go away, or check-in at the airport like "BYE YVR", but unless someone is house-sitting for you, these types of posts are a very bad idea as they openly let the world know that you are not home and they can come through and take their pick! Your holiday snaps are great, but resist insta-posting them until you're home.

4) Hide your Hide-A-Key.

A Hide-A-Key is fantastic if you leave home for a few hours and lose your keys, however, that plastic rock is easier to spot than you think and a burglar who thinks you're not going to be home for a while will definitely take his time to find it and let himself right in!

5) Safe-keep your valuables.

Your great-grandmothers ring that has been in the family for generations or those silver dollar investments your dad made you collect when you were younger are a massive score for someone poking around your home for things they can get rid of for cash and even harder to claim once their gone. Make sure that you safe-keep any of your valuables that you just couldn't stand to lose!

6) Make sure your doors and windows are locked.

This seems like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised what you forget when you're rushing for that flight!!

7) Take a look at your home from outside.

Check if you can see any valuables, artwork or other belongings. If you can see them, so can a criminal!

8) Install a burglar alarm.

This is probably the best way to prevent a burglary! Studies show that homes without a working security system are 300% more likely to get broken in to!!!

9) Make sure your garage is secure.

A garage can be an easy entry-point for thieves that can go fairly undetected. If your garage has an electric opener, make sure to unplug the motor so that criminals can't use a universal remote to open it. You can also secure any front or side garage doors with deadbolts on the inside. Typically, one per door is sufficient.

10) Unplug any appliances that aren't on timers to avoid a power surge.

Unless it is on a timer (like lights, TV's or radios) it can be unplugged! Only thing worse than your home being burgled on vacation would be coming back to a shell of a home that caught fire while you were on vacation...
